Truth vs. Troost — Documentary Feature
Role: Director, principle cinematographer, editor, producer, original score. Reported, filmed, edited and released in 4 weeks.
If you want to understand democracy, don't start with the Capitol. Start with a street. On the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, we wanted to leave Washington behind and go somewhere democracy has an address. We went to Kansas City’s Troost Ave.
Troost isn't just a street. It's an archive. A seam. A line that has carried decades of public policy, private decisions, investment and neglect, fear and hope. Stand on one corner and you can feel history pulling in opposite directions. I know because I've lived on both sides of it. Two blocks west. Two blocks east. Close enough to walk in minutes. Far enough to cross generations of investment and neglect. The Voting Rights Act promised that every voice would carry equal weight. Sixty years later, we wanted to see what that promise looked like where people actually live.
When Missouri proposed redrawing the 5th Congressional District, the line traced Troost—one of America's most notorious racial and economic fault lines. Maps can make those choices look clean. Streets never do.
We came looking for a story about voting rights. What we found was a story about a street—and how that street can hold an entire country's unfinished conversation about who counts.

In March, Trump signed an executive order directing the Postal Service to cut off ballot delivery in any state that refuses to hand over its voter rolls, including names and Social Security numbers. The proposed system could also expose how you voted.
That's not new. Systems like this were dismantled over a century ago because voting the "wrong way" led to intimidation and violence. Now there's a push to bring them back through a DHS-USPS federal database.
